Men's Custom Suits and Sports Coats

A custom suit should do more than make you look good. It should make you feel confident too.

At Q. Contrary, Mary takes the time to understand your lifestyle, personal style, the way you want your clothing to fit, purpose of the garment and what your wardrobe needs. She will guide you through every decision, from selecting the fabric and silhouette to choosing lapels, pockets, buttons, and finishing details.

Whether you are designing a suit, sport coat, trousers, or separates, the process is personal and easy to navigate. The result is clothing made specifically for your body, your wardrobe, and the way you live.

Custom clothing is more than an outfit. It is a long-term investment in quality, confidence, and personal style.

Fitting Process

1. The Consultation

Meet with Mary to discuss your lifestyle, upcoming occasions, personal style, and what you would like your custom clothing to accomplish.

2. Fabric and Design

Together, you will select the fabric, lining, lapels, pockets, buttons, and other details that make the garment uniquely yours.

3. Measurements and Fit

Mary takes precise measurements and evaluates your build, posture, and proportions to build a pattern just for you. You will also discuss how you prefer your clothing to fit and feel.

4. Pattern and Construction

A pattern is created for your body and sent to our master makers, who begin constructing your garment with careful attention to structure and detail.

5. Basted Fitting

If needed, you will try on the unfinished garment so Mary can evaluate its fit, balance, and proportions. Any necessary adjustments are recorded before your final garment is completed.

6. Final Fitting

At your final appointment, Mary reviews the finished garment, confirms the fit, and ensures every detail is exactly as intended.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Pricing is primarily driven by fabric selection, garment construction, and level of detailing. At Q. Contrary, we work closely with some of the best fabric mills and buy the cloth directly from them Loro Piana, Scabal, and Gladson, among others. Each fabric offers different design, quality in terms of softness, durability, performance, and exclusivity, which naturally affects price.

  • With proper care, a Q. Contrary custom garment is designed to last 10 to 15 years or more. Each piece is constructed with premium canvas structure (not glued or fused), high-quality linings, buttons, and padding details that are often overlooked but make a meaningful difference in both longevity and fit over time.

To extend the life of your garment, we recommend storing it on a quality hanger, using a garment bag for protection, and avoiding daily wear. Like fine footwear, tailored clothing benefits from rest. Allowing your suit or sport coat a day or two between wears gives the fabric time to breathe and recover, ensuring it continues to look and feel its best for years to come.

  • Taking care of your custom suit and sport coat plays a major role in preserving the look, fit, and longevity of your custom garments. We recommend storing your suit or sport coat on a quality hanger to maintain its shape and structure, and using a garment bag for added protection.

Dry cleaning should be done thoughtfully, not routinely. Clean your garment only when it has been exposed to heavy perspiration or if staining occurs, as over-cleaning can shorten the life of fine fabrics. Custom suits and sport coats should never be cleaned at home in a washing machine, as this can damage the structure, canvas, and overall integrity of the garment. We strongly recommend professional care only and from a reputable cleaner (not the 99 cent cleaners).

Whenever possible, entrust your garments to a high-end dry cleaner experienced with tailored clothing. If you live in Phoenix, we recommend Maroney’s, Arcadia, or Elite Cleaners, all of which understand the care required for premium fabrics and construction.
Finally, allow your garments time to rest between wears. Giving your suit or sport coat a day or two to breathe helps the fabric recover, reduces wear, and keeps it looking sharp for years to come.

  • Custom Suits: $1,500–$8,000
    Custom Sport Coats: $1,200–$7,000
    Custom Trousers: $550–$3,000

The price is determined based on quality of the fabric. The only up charge is if your chest measurement is larger than 58", we will need to charge 20% more because we need to order more fabric.

  • Custom garments are built specifically for your height, build, posture, proportions and how you like clothes to fit. Unlike off-the-rack pieces that rely on standard sizing and alterations, custom clothing is cut and constructed from the ground up for your body resulting in superior comfort, balance, and confidence.

  • All measurements and fittings are handled personally by Mary. This ensures consistency, precision, and a level of care that can only come from working directly with an experienced professional who understands both design and fit.

  • Not necessarily. Some clients know exactly what they want and schedule an appointment to have measurements taken and have their garment made. Other clients prefer to have a consultation to understand more what fabrics we offer, what Mary would recommend, how the process works and gather information. You are welcome to schedule private consultation for 20 minutes or an actual fitting (for about an hour) to get measured and design your custom garment.
