If you’re planning a trip to Arizona and golfing is on your itinerary, your wardrobe needs to be just as prepared as your swing. While many Arizona country clubs don’t post a rigid dress code online, there are long-standing expectations that help maintain the tradition and polish of the game. The good news with a few smart wardrobe choices, you’ll feel confident, comfortable, and completely appropriate (no awkward pro shop pit stops required). After all, when you look your best, you tend to play your best too.
Let’s walk through the essentials so you can show up to your tee time dressed to impress.
Start with the Non-Negotiable: A Collared Shirt

If you want to dress like a pro or at least like someone who belongs on the course, a collared shirt is your starting point. Many Arizona country clubs require either a traditional collar or a mock collar, so this isn’t an area to experiment. Skip the t-shirt you wore on your morning hike or workout. Instead, opt for a well-fitted polo made from breathable, performance-friendly fabric. Today’s golf shirts are anything but boring, you’ll find bold prints, refined patterns, modern color palettes, and technical fabrics designed specifically for desert climates.
If you arrive without a proper collar, don’t be surprised if you’re asked to change or purchase a shirt from the pro shop before heading out. It happens more often than you’d think.
Style tip: A great polo should skim the body, not cling, not billow. Fit matters just as much as formality. Make sure you are comfortable in the polo and it doesn’t affect your swing.
Yes, Your Shirt Should Be Tucked In
Once you’ve selected the right shirt, make sure it’s tucked in. This small detail instantly elevates your look and signals that you understand golf etiquette. A tucked in shirt also gives you the opportunity to add a belt, which pulls the outfit together and makes it feel intentional rather than thrown on. On private courses especially, untucked shirts tend to stand out and not in a good way. When picking a belt, select one that matched your shorts or pants. It will blend in and look clean and modern.
Shorts Are Welcome Just Choose the Right One
Considering the Arizona heat, most country clubs encourage golf shorts, especially during the warmer months. That said, not all shorts are created equal. Leave gym shorts, cargo shorts, and anything overly baggy at home. Large pockets, wrinkled fabric, or sloppy hems can make even the best polo look off balance. Instead, reach for tailored Bermuda style shorts or polished dress shorts that hit just above the knee and are properly pressed.
If you prefer pants, golf slacks are always a safe and stylish option. Lightweight fabrics designed for airflow and stretch will keep you comfortable without sacrificing polish.
Important note: Denim, whether shorts or jeans, is typically not permitted on country club courses. Save your denim for post-round dinners, sightseeing, or the flight home.
Footwear Matters More Than You Think
Whether you are walking the course or taking a golf cart, shoes is an area where many golfers make mistakes. Open toed shoes, sandals, flip-flops, or casual sneakers are generally a no go. Golf shoes or clean, structured athletic shoes designed for the course are your best bet. They provide traction, support, and complete the overall look. Many courses will not allow you to wear metal spikes. They allow soft spikes or comparable sport shoes. If you are not sure, ask a buddy or call the course before you start packing your suitcase.
When in Doubt, Ask the Club
Every course has its own personality. Resort courses tend to be more relaxed, while private clubs often lean traditional. If you’re unsure about your outfit, a quick call to the country club can save you from an awkward moment on arrival.
And remember, golf attire isn’t about being restrictive. It’s about respect for the game, the club, and yourself.

Arizona Country Club does have a golf dress code, and it follows the traditional private-club standard similar to other classic country clubs in the Phoenix area.
For men, collared shirts or mock turtlenecks are required on the golf course. Shirts must be tucked into tailored pants or shorts. Caps, hats, and visors must be worn in the conventional manner and not reversed. Soft spikes, or comparable athletic shoes must be worn at all times.
For women, golf dresses, mid-thigh length skirts/skorts, slacks, mid-thigh length shorts, collared shirts and blouses. All sleeveless attire must include a collar. The following is not permitted: cutoffs, denim jeans, army camouflage, t-shirts, tank tops, spaghetti strapped tops, sweat suits, jogging suits, yoga-type leggings, sweat pants, gym shorts and tennis attire.
Phoenix Country Club has a dress code from the moment you step onto the property. It’s important to the members and something rooted in tradition and represents the dignity of the club. If you are attending this fine establishment, please be dressed appropriately. Here is the entire dress code for the club and I will just touch on the dress code for the golf course:
Golf Attire for Men. Golfers shall wear appropriate footwear. Men shall wear collared shirts, slacks or mid-thigh length golf shorts at all times. Tennis, jogging shorts, denim pants or shorts (including jeans) are not permitted.
-Shirts: mock turtlenecks are permitted.
-Hats: Hats must be worn bill forward.
-Shorts: Shorts shall be kept neat and pressed at all times and must be in good taste. Shorts and pants must be worn at the crest of the hip. Cotton cargo shorts are not permitted. String-tied or elastic support wear, such as basketball apparel, is not permitted. Leather sandals and bare feet are not allowed. Any questionable golf attire is at the discretion of the Golf Pro.
Golf Attire for Women. Proper golf attire includes any clothing specifically designed for golf and similar to products sold in the Golf Shop. Golf dresses, mid-thigh length skirts/skorts, slacks, mid-thigh length shorts, collared shirts and blouses are considered appropriate attire. All sleeveless attire must include a collar. Proper attire on the golf course does not include halter tops, t-shirts, cut-offs, sweat pants, work out pants, leggings, warm-up suits, jeans, swim wear, short shorts, tennis skorts or other athletic shorts.
Phoenix Country Club is old-school, private-club proper. Think traditional rules, pressed polos, no wiggle room. It’s one of those places where the dress code isn’t a suggestion, it’s part of the culture.
Clubhouse: Hats and caps are not to be worn backwards. Shirts are always to be tucked in under trousers, except for shirts (such as tropical shirts) designed to be worn outside of the trousers. Clothing that has noticeable rips, tears, excessive wrinkles or soiling is improper attire and not allowed to be worn.
Mixed Grill: Hats and caps must be removed in the Mixed Grill and all other indoor dining areas except the Men's and Women's and Goldwater Grills. Tee shirts, denim shorts, cotton cargo or carpenter shorts, fitness attire, jogging suits and sweat-suits are not proper attire for men.
Biltmore golf course does have a dress code, and they ask their guests to adhere to it.
-Men must wear a shirt with a collar.
-Ladies are asked to wear a top with either a collar or sleeveless.
The following is not permitted: Athletic shorts, athletic pants, denim, cut-off shorts, tank tops, halter-tops, t-shirts or swimwear. I can’t imagine who would want to golf in jeans or swim trunks but who knows.
For shoes, men should wear soft spikes or athletic shoes; metal golf spikes are not allowed.
This club maintains standard golf attire requirement and if in doubt, dress as you would for any upscale course. If you haven’t golfed this course before, the course feels carved into the landscape vs being built on top of it. The scenery is as memorable as golf itself. It feels upscale but not stuffy and you want to dress to fit in. It’s more desert lodge than country club so dress for golf and look sporty but not totally buttoned up.
Regarding what to wear, collars and acceptable golf shirts are required (no t-shirts). Golf pants and shorts are permitted as long as they are an appropriate length. Denim/jeans and gym attire is not acceptable. Footwear is encouraged on the course and should not ruin the greens. Soft-spike or spikeless golf shoes required (metal spikes aren’t allowed).
Grayhawk Golf Club does have a dress code. Proper golf attire is required to play for both men and women; including a collared shirt such as golf shirts and mock necks (think Tiger Woods). If you show up without a collared shirt, the club may ask you to purchase one from the pro shop in order to play.
Golf tailored shorts and pants are appropriate. Soft-spiked golf shoes or appropriate athletic shoes are recommended (no metal spikes).
Women should wear golf-appropriate tops (collared or golf-tailored) and bottoms. Athletic golf attire designed for women is typically acceptable if in keeping with golf standards.
T-Shirts, cutoffs, jeans or denim are not permitted.
If you’re planning to play, stick with classic golf attire (collared shirts, golf shorts/pants, golf shoes) this will meet the course requirements and help avoid any issues at check-in.
If you are planning to visit the Quill Creek Café inside Grayhawk, the dress code is business casual. Think smart casual attire like polos shirts, sundresses, slacks and similar is appropriate.
Yes, We-Ko-Pa does have a golf dress code similar to most full-service courses. Here’s the gist of it. Proper golf attire is required. Collared shirts or mock collared golf shirts should be worn. Bermuda-length golf shorts, golf pants, or similar golf bottoms are appropriate. Shoes can have soft spokes. Metal spikes are generally not allowed. Like other golf courses, denim/jeans are not permitted.
Papago, like others on this list, does have a dress code. They require proper golf attire to play. Collared or mock neck shirts are required. No denim and no swimwear allowed. The course is also a spikeless facility (soft-spikes or golf shoes without metal spikes) are required.

What is Proper Golf Attire:
Here’s the plain-English definition of proper golf attire the version most courses mean when they say it:
Proper Golf Attire (Men & Women)
Tops
- Collared polo shirts or approved mock-neck golf tops.
- Sleeveless is usually fine for women if it’s golf-designed.
- No T-shirts, tank tops, crop tops, or workout tops.
Bottoms
- Golf pants, golf shorts, skirts, or skorts.
- Tailored, athletic golf fabrics are expected.
- No denim/jeans, cutoffs, cargo shorts, sweatpants, leggings, or bike shorts.
Footwear
- Golf shoes with soft spikes or spikeless soles.
- Some courses allow clean athletic shoes.
- No metal spikes, flip-flops, sandals, or casual street shoes.
General rule of thumb, If it’s made for golf and looks intentional, you’re good.
If it looks like gym wear, beach wear, or street wear, it’s probably not allowed.
Dress with Confidence, Play with Confidence
If you show up in a polished collared shirt, tailored shorts or slacks, and appropriate footwear, you’ll be perfectly equipped for a great round of golf in Arizona. Leave the gym clothes, T-shirts, denim, and open-toed shoes at home, and you’ll blend in seamlessly whether you’re a seasoned golfer or just enjoying the experience.
Looking confident on the course allows you to focus on what really matters: enjoying the game, the scenery, and the sunshine.
